1966 Mustang Fastback K-code with factory Power Steering

Postby 1967KConv » Fri Jul 06, 2018 2:47 pm

Hello guys,

I was speaking to an original owner of a 66 K GT Fastback that he states had power steering from the factory. Is this true?

Would there be anything from the factory on the car that could verify this?

Thanks guys.

If it has factory P/S the steering box tag will be HCC-AW as compared to the HCC-AX of the Hipo and GT manual steering cars. This is not a definitive answer but just something to observe.

As far as I know, power steering on a 64-66 "K" code car was dealer installed. The factory supposedly made one for a Ford family member and the car wound up in Italy. It was the subject of a restoration on another forum.

Thank you.

Fred, I thought the AX was on all 66 GT's with or without PS.

Is there something that would have been added to the frame at the factory to accommodate a bracket?

If you are thinking about the bracket for the fixed end of the power steering ram, there are threaded inserts in the upward curved section of the left frame rail. If not, the holes are there. If no holes, a shop can make them.

The HCC-AX tagged manual GT or Hipo box is the same ratio as an HCC-AW P/S box but has a slightly different preload on the bearings. All P/S cars got the HCC-AW box regardless of being GT or not.

All Mustang frames have hexagonal holes where the P/S 375474-S8 nuts are fitted when P/S is installed. These nuts are only factory installed if P/S is factory installed. The term for these are RivNuts. They are a major pain in the neck to install when adding P/S. I am sure that the factory had some special power operated tool to install these and I know that I do NOT have one.

I have a 65 GT Fastback "A" code (San Jose May build) that currently has power steering but did not get a factory power steering setup, I have the original window sticker. It either had the rivnuts installed, or a dealer had the tools. That's over 50 years ago so it's difficult to determine.

Jim, I have installed a fair number of P/S setups in Mustangs that did not originally come with P/S. I do have the factory RivNuts and once installed it is hard to tell that this was not done at the factory. It is just a pain in the neck to install the RivNuts as they really do not crush easily. I have had to improvise tools to do this job.

So are these the two rivnuts that are facing up on the horizontal left frame rail?
