Bumpers

Postby Ronzcars » Sat Jun 10, 2017 5:27 pm

Is there a stamping or casting anywhere on the original bumpers off my '65 Mustang that identifies them as an OEM factory piece? Thanks, Ron

I believe that on the rear bumper there is a date code stamped near the license plate light area. I also believe that there is a date code stamped on one of the lower tabs on the front bumper. I will need to look at mine when I am at home again on Monday.

For factory original fronts, there is a date code and manufactures' initial stamped into the metal on the LH side, bottom edge of the bumper near the square hole. The "square hole" is about 4 inches inward of the large bumper bolt.
A factory original rear bumper "may" have had a stamping near the license plate light.

Is it also true that an oem front bumper will have a minute flange, of sorts, along the bottom, much like a car spoiler and discernable with a feel?

This is something that I never paid any attention to however my NOS Ford bumpers do have that ridge.

gjz30075: Thanks for the tip on the small "spoiler-like" flange (lip?) along the bumper's bottom edge. One of mine has that lip and I found the numbers on it, too. Ron...

More info re the numbers I found...

Postby Ronzcars » Thu Jun 15, 2017 6:49 pm

gjz30075: Let me add to my comments above that I had been looking for the numbers on the INSIDE of my front bumper when I happened to notice the numbers on the OUTSIDE of the bumper. They are on the driver's (left) underside of the bumper on that "tab" that sticks out above the square hole. The numbers read: 4 8 M2. I interpret this as the 4 standing for 1964; the 8 being a mystery; and the M2 for December 2. My car's build date is February 16th, 1965, so that date of December 2, 1964 on the bumper seems correct to me. If you have any idea what the 8 represents, please let me know. In addition to those numbers, there is a 4 1/2" x 1 1/2" rectangular strip of thick, once-glossy paper glued to the inside of the middle of the bumper that bears a professionally-printed "Ford" logo at the top and underneath in large print: C5ZZ-17757-A. I'm surprised this glue-on label has survived all these years on the bumper. I was able to very easily lift it off the bumper without damaging it in any way and it's now sitting in front of me on my desk as I type this. I suspect one of the reasons it has adhered to the bumper for so long is that the car has been disassembled and sitting in my garage since I bought it in 1990, only recently getting much needed restoration attention as I work at bringing it back to life. Thanks again for your tip on the "spoiler lip" on these original bumpers. Later, Ron...

That label that you now have in front of you was only on Ford service part replacement bumpers. The 4 is more likely 1974 or 1984.
