I've been using the basic Autolite 45 plugs, with stock gap in many 289 engines for years. No need for expensive platinum plugs. Their only advantage is they will last longer. Not too much of a concern on a classic car that is driven less than 50,000 miles a year.

A colder plug is used to reduce the chance of detonation caused by the higher temps from full throttle operation. I used both BF22s and BTF1s but I can't honestly say it was needed since the stock engine runs fairly rich.

If you use the cold plugs on the street, you will develop a miss very quickly.

Every motor is a little different, but I had no trouble with Autolite 45's. On numerous occasions in uninhabited West Texas i would run the car flat out (with a vintage Paxton) for as long as a tank of gas would last, about 135 miles. I did retard the timing four degrees. I would start out with a good wide range plug like the 45 and adjust the mixture first if it appears to be running hot.
