This C4OF-AL carburetor was SOLD for $1,660 on Feb 9, 2014 by eBay member "hot-rod-usa-1" with 32 bids.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/64-65-MUSTANG-K-CODE-MANUAL-CHOKE-AUTOLITE-CARBURETOR-HIPO-289-C40FAL-TIGER-FORD-/251439187561?nma=true&si=4W2gDX%252FlEHsokReQIKqjddxKR%252BY%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

DESCRIPTION

"Up for bid/sale is a very rare carburetor , it is an autolite C40FAL , the hipo 289 manual choke carb that was used on the K-code Mustang , Fairlane , Falcon , Mercury Comet and from what I read some Sunbeam Tigers . The Carb is in nice un-molested condition nothing frozen or broken , the only missing item I see is the ID TAG . The vacuum advance threads are very nice the fuel line threads are good too .The C40FAL stamp is nice the C is a little light ( see pics ) the 40 is great deep and very visible the FAL is very nice too just not as deeply stamped as the 40 ( has the 112 in the circle above that stamp along with L3 ,may just be a 3 but looks like an L there too ). Most of these carbs were discarded for a carb with more performance when new so they are tough to come by today . The carb has been sitting on shelf for years so it will for sure need a rebuild . I am no expert on the Hipo Fomoco stuff so look at the pics and ask any questions you wish I will do my best to answer them , I can send more pics too . Shipping will be $17.00 international shipping will be $55.00 . Thank you !!!!!!! "

Here is a used C4OF-AL carburetor that was sold on Ebay August 10, 2015 by seller boc-beau for $1,455.99:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ford-289-HIPO-4 ... true&rt=nc

The carburetor has the wrong top and is missing the manual choke linkage. It does have the correct boosters and jets. The seller, to their credit, did mention the issues and had plenty of pictures for bidders to see.

What's wrong with the top? I do see the issue with the choke bellcrank..........
Some 390's had a similar top with an alignment "nub" where the automatic choke rubber tube fitting normally would be...... is the "nub" the deal?

You are definitely on the right track on this. The top should have a place where a brass nipple for an air inlet hose connects to the automatic choke heat riser on the exhaust manifold on a standard 289 engine. That place on the top is then NOT drilled out for the tube as a Hipo does not need it. It is a basic part of the casting and this one does not have it. This top that is not drilled out is exclusive to manual choke Hipo carburetors AFAIK.

Here is a good used unit that was for sale on Ebay by seller 289route66:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1964-1965-Ford- ... 7675.l2557

It was bid to $760.00 by 6 bidders with 11 bids but it did not meet the sellers reserve on January 17, 2016 and therefore did not sell.

Considering the $2000.00 Buy it Now price, it's no wonder it wasn't sold for the high bid.

There's at least one other 4100 top that isn't drilled for that brass nipple. I've got one on my '66 GT. I don't know what the original application was.
My top also has a bi-metallic hot idle compensator setup too. So not exactly the same top as a hipo 4100.
The body on the eBay guy's C4OF-AL did come out of the hipo 4100 casting mold. It has the ridge on the passenger side above and in line with the
primary throttle shaft. That's a dead giveaway......

The casting for the body was never in question as far as I know. Does your top have the four brass air vent tubes?

It's got the vent tubes. It's not a real hipo carb but it's got the right boosters, etc.

Here's one currently for sale by eBay member " 69scjq4.30 " for a cool $2000.00 (Or make an offer).

DESCRIPTION: "This is an original Autolite 4100 carburetor for a 64.5 Mustang or 64 Fairlane with a 289 High Performance engine and a manual transmission. This carb has a tag on it with the stamping C5OF L, but the left front ear stamp is C4OF AL, was informed tag is not to this carb. but regardless it comes with it. The tag has a date of August of 1964. The original vacuum advance port plug is missing. To identify that is is in fact a real Hi-Po carb. just look past the manual choke lever and you can see the extra rib of material that is the stop for choke lever. Good Luck."

This carb has a tag on it with the stamping C5OF L, but the left front ear stamp is C4OF AL, was informed tag is not to this carb. but regardless it comes with it. The tag has a date of August of 1964. The original vacuum advance port plug is missing. Re: Used C4OF-AL Carburetor

The Buy-It-Now was well beyond any previous sales on these C4OF-AL carbs.

This most recent sale might change the previous trends we've seen on eBay.
