I think the later date C80E offerings at the local parts store for $30 will be just fine. These prices are crazy.

I need a water pump for my 65, and am not looking for an original at these prices. What are the details on the "C8OE"?

When I went to my local Autozone a few years ago to find a replacement for my Tawain water pump, I asked them to look through the boxes for one with a Ford part number. We found one with a C80E ('68 Ford) part number and it was the same price as the overseas versions. Granted it doesn't have the HiPo Impeller, but it works just fine for my needs.

If you still have your original, there a places to have your original rebuilt to as good as new.

Interesting that all these pumps have repop impellers. An original pump can be rebuilt for $100-150 including the cost of a repop impeller...

Greg, If you purchased your Kar in June of 1965, it most likely has an aluminum pump as the changeover to cast iron was that month. Your Kar was most likely produced before June was it not? If it does have an aluminum pump the C8OE will not fit your timing cover. If you have a cast iron pump it would originally have been a C5OE-B pump. The C8OE pump can be used as it was the Ford replacement for a standard, non Hipo pump. Ford never produced any C8OE pumps as Hipo pumps. The last true Hipo pumps were C6OE ones. If you are showing your Kar, keep in mind that the water pump casting number is highly visible. Another obvious difference in the C8OE pump is that the heater hose tube tapers down from 3/4" to 5/8" size where the C5OE-B and C6OE pumps are 5/8" straight tubes.

I replaced the water pump in 68 or 69 and it has a non-HiPo cast iron pump. It does have "FoMoCo" on the casting. The build date for my car is June 10, 1965. Back then, nobody knew that an original water pump would ever be of value. That's why I passed on the 427 Cobra for $4K. It was just a used car with 6K miles on it!

Your Kar was most likely one of the earliest Kars that recieved the changeover to cast iron water pumps.

So the Aluminum Pump would not fit on my front cover? I know the current pump is not original on the engine but I just assumed that the original was Aluminum.

Aluminum water pumps use a front cover where the cover acts as the back side of the water pump. The cast iron pump covers have a separate bolt on cover plate for the back of the pump and the timing cover is different because of this. Without looking very closely, if you see 7 reinforcing ribs behind the water pump on the top of the cover, that is the early version timing cover for cast iron pumps. The ribs were added to give extra strength due to the weight of the cast iron pump. Later versions of the cast iron water pump timing cover do not have the ribs. Timing covers for aluminum water pumps do not have the ribs either.

I went out to the shop to check. The current non-HiPo pump is marked C8AE-A. Since it has been sitting for 15 years or so, I think I will replace it, but NOT for $500 or more.

Here's a rebuild kit to do just that. It's offered for sale @ $135.00 by eBay member "dragon-up".

DESCRIPTION: "This sale price is for the highest quality rebuilding kit available. Flat rate priority mail shipping. For USA buyers only. This HiPo kit comes with the highest quality, heavy duty bearing and unitized seal/seat combo, and replica hipo impeller and gasket. It fits the oem original type pump, and some after market pumps too. NOTE: This seal type requires a special pre-set unitized seal installation tool to set it at the right pressure, and keep it from getting damaged during installation (seal install tool costs $25.00 extra). NOTE: You can have this kit installed by my rebuilder for $35.00 extra. Just ask".
