Here's what appears to be a used C5OE balancer for sale by eBay member "forkey2511".

DESCRIPTION: "Factory original 289 HIPO harmonic balancer....it was taken off of my car because I thought it was bad, I bought an after market one from Summit, but had same problem. I found out the vibration was from the exhaust rubing the body. There is nothing wrong with it, it has some pitting. You can still read all the timing marks."

This balancer is for sale by eBay member "mustangmasters428".

DESCRIPTION: "Here we have an original C5OE-6316-A 289 HiPo Harmonic Balancer. The Ford engineers felt it necessary to add the extra balancing capacity of this thicker, heavier damper. A signature item of all 289 HiPo's, Ford designers used this unit in Shelbys and all early 289 Hipo equipped motors. This item is also correct for a 67 GT 350 Shelby, and would make a good spare if not replacing your original unit.

This unit came to us in good used condition with only minor pitting flaws. When we freshed up this good used unit we find the condition free of gouges or stripped out threads and rubber in good shape, we feel this unit will make a great replacement for your worn or tattered original, and will bolt right on with no modifications and perform as originally designed.

Unlike the C8ZE Hipo model, this C5OE version is round all the way around and has the correct casting number for the true numbers correct buyer putting together a Shelby or even GT Mustang. Should you be looking for the later service unit let us know, and we will be glad to offer you a auction just for you !

Whether as a spare, or as a replacement to get your car on the road, don't let this one get away as these are getting hard to find!"

I lusted over this item because of the J4 date code, even in the face of the apparent hammer damage.

Unfortunately the seller would only accept a Pay Pal transaction, which I'm not set up with.

Maybe that was the Hipo gods way of telling me not to bid on the damaged item even with its matching (to my engine) date code.

Oh well I've lived with the Ford service item for 13 years now. I guess a couple of more won't make any difference.

Charlie
That is the really annoying part of this hobby. Knowing that you have a perfectly seviceable item on your car but it is not quite date correct.
Then you spot the very piece, all perfect and it gnaws away at you until you just have to open your wallet.

There must be a cure, surely ??????????????

This used balancer was SOLD by eBay member "jollyroge" for only $158.49.

DESCRIPTION: "Original Ford 289 Hi-Po harmonic balancer Shelby GT350 Cobra. Here is an original 289 Hi-Po balancer that is in nice shape. This is the more popular variation with the C5OE Ford part number. This was removed from an original 66 Shelby but would be correct for any 289 Hi-Po engine including Cobra’s. It is in very nice shape with the seal surface showing hardly any wear . Nice clear timing marks as well. There are the usual additional holes for balancing. The repro balancers are available but do not carry a Ford logo or part number on them.

Here is your chance to get an original balancer for your period correct car. Winner pays actual UPS shipping cost."

This balancer was bid up to $236.50 but was NOT SOLD because the seller's reserve was not met.

DESCRIPTION: "Nice used hipo balancer used on the Shelby or K code Mustangs. The balancer has a date code of A5 which I believe would be Jan 1965 but please verify with your parts manuals to be sure this fits your application.

Part is used as shown in the photos and not pitted like most you see. There are a few small dents shown in a few photos but should not effect performance. These can be filled with filler. Rubber looks good and the bolt holes are clean. The crankshaft end may need a sleeve which most people use anyway since these are usually worn.

Part number is clean and the date code is visible with the 0-12 degree timing marks."
