re the discussion on another thread about broken rocker arm studs; I would advise against buying a set of NOS, or used, rocker arm studs for a HiPo that is going to be driven. This is a highly stressed part and the age of the part, and the "classic" metallurgy, is working against you.

New, not NOS, studs are the way to go for reliability.

You need to be very careful when purchasing "new" studs. Chevys use a very similar stud and it will fit our Hipo 289 heads however there is a difference in the chamfer on the threads to the boss that meets the heads. The Ford version has a much more pronounced squared off version where Chevy has a more rounded chamfer. The problem is that if you put the Chevy studs in Hipo 289 heads, the studs will crack the head castings where the studs mount. I have a few heads here that have this problem and I,so far, have been unable to get them repaired.

the ARP studs have the same chamfer Fred mentions. You will either need to use guide plates with them, (the chamfer locates the guide plates), or use a large drill bit to relieve the stud hole slightly where the chamfer meets the stud boss. I've used both solutions on HiPo heads successfully. I never had to machine down the stud bosses the thickness of the guide plate to eliminate possible interference with the rocker (roller type) arm. Although I do know that is sometimes necessary.

I've used several HiPo heads that were cracked in the manner Fred describes. On some I used ARP thread sealant to fill up the cracks and seal the stud threads. Other times I tried red locktite gel (Permatex version of red locktite) to fill any crack and seal the threads. In either case the cracks didn't grow, and didn't leak any coolant from the cavity below the studs. If the crack had started to creep, I was prepared to drill a small shallow hole at the end of it and fill it with JB Weld. That seems to work pretty well to keep a crack from growing longer.

I don't know if anyone has tried to fix these cracks with a time-sert threaded insert. But that may be the best solution, short of welding. And welding cast iron is not always successful

has anyone made an offer on these and had it declined ?

I'm tempted to make one in hopes this thread will die.

I think he's charged an insertion fee every 29 days, ie, when the auction renews. Gotta be barely breaking even by now.
