I spoke to the current owner who told me he could not locate a vin on the block or transmission of this Kar, even though his ad states the engine and transmission have never been out. He reminded me "not all K-codes had their block/transmission stamped". I hear that a lot, unfortunately.
Currently: 1966 Ford Mustang Fastback, K-code, HiPo, GT-350 Clone, Signalflare Red, black interior
Formerly: 1965 Ford Mustang Coupe, A-code, Wimbledon White, red interior

"not all K-codes had their block/transmission stamped"

This is most often stated when offering a car with less than stellar documentation. Not saying this is the case, just always has been a flag if the owners does not have strong history and paperwork to negate it.

The more you read, the more your find out that all FACTORY blocks and FACTORY manual transmissions were stamped (especially San Jose). Note - FACTORY. Why do I say this? The statements that back this up reveal that many engines and transmissions were destroyed by overeager owners/drivers (I was one of them in 1964 with a Fairlane HP) and replaced by Ford, some under warrantee, others paid outright. (Mine was a busted driver's side rear axle and 2nd gear synchros in the T-10 transmission.) There are others that made their own K engines from an existing 289 using the HP components. I helped a friend to do this (a USAF Sargent at Westover AFB).

I would add that the actual build or assembly date of the engine is more significant than a VIN stamp that can be added after the fact. Cleveland stamped every engine with the assembly date code, and this can help establish whether an engine is "matching numbers" or not. Any engine swap that happened following a catastrophic failure will likely not fit the time sequence that would be "normal".

SixT5HiPo I agree with your above statement 100%. I have heard of blocks being stamped with K vin numbers and the date codes do not correspond with the build date of the car.
