Nice looking car.

Note the words "original" and "correct" do not mean they are either to this car.
A little digging in the past will shed more light on this car.

Just sayin'.

Spoke to Todd who verified vin stamps on the block and transmission do match the apron vin. His transmission is an HEH-T. The fuel pump is NOT the correct fuel pump: 4567S.

No original paperwork with the kar.

Maybe it's the camera angle, but does the fan spacer look a bit longer than normal?

Yes, the fan spacer does look longer than normal. It appears that it may not have a Hipo fan either.

It has a later Ford replacement distributor where Ford converted a single point with vacuum advance into a dual point. It has an incorrect water pump pulley. I do like the fuel pump. Most, if not all, of the suspension pieces are Gypos. Gypo is a term we used in the Ford parts departments referring to any parts that were not Ford pieces. I nicer term is an aftermarket replacement part. :)

This car has backup lights. I didn't know that you could get a 1965 GT with backup lights.

You are correct that Ford did not offer backup lights from the factory on 65 GT Mustangs. Ford offered a backup lamp kit C5ZZ 15499 A as an over the counter accessory to add backup lamps to any Mustang. It comes with the lamp assemblies, gaskets templates for cutting the holes and wiring to the front of the car. Therefore any Mustang could have them added and still be reasonably correct.

Interesting observations...In the meantime, HERE'S a GT rear valance with b/u light holes that's been on eBay forever for a price that explains why.

This car has been around for many years albeit not in this condition.
A check of the vin back to 1988-89 shows little of the current story as accurate.

Someone did some work to build this car to where it is today.
Just not $85k worth.

By 1966 backup lights were not just an option but standard equipment so in 1966 all Mustangs including GT's received backup lights. The part number for a GT rear valance is a C5ZZ 6540544 C and was NOT cut for backup lights. The Ford MPC stated "cut holes for backup lights when required". This was the same for the C5ZZ 6540544 B rear valance for non GT cars. My belief is that the valance that Bob Perkins has is an assembly line part from 1966 as there was no service part version of that valance. That certainly does not degrade Perkins valance but, to me, would upgrade it to a higher level than NOS.

Wow, very nice car.

What's that strap holding the heater hose up off the valve cover? Factory, dealer or owner installed?

Originally all of these Mustangs had that strap to my knowledge. It was a cheesy material that looked like it was cut from old tire carcasses. The bolt holes for it are in all of the right hand shock tower braces although the bolt was just a small sheet metal bolt.

That's quite right...The one on my kar has been clearly made from a piece of a tire. The cords are easy to see on the edges.

So I went through this one on the concours site because I was shocked by my car that it didn't have the straps or even a hole drilled on the shock brace for the strap, and the heater house ran in-between the valve cover and carb, a straight run (not twisted). I thought this was incorrect but as we dug deeper into the story, there was a brief period at the San Jose plant where they did this straight heater hose run and a couple other weird runs with the heater hoses. The below link will show one of the weirder discussions durning this time period with the twisting... they were doing it for Shelby and K-Codes for some reason...
