This is a beautiful kar. However a few expensive to find/replace parts have been noted to be incorrect: manifolds, carb, distributor, fuel pump in addition to the exhaust manifold gaskets which should not be installed. What is the general opinion of the exhaust system? With a build date of December 1964 shouldn't the Arvinode exhaust be on this Kar? What about the red oxide primer on the underbody? Didn't Dearborn predominately use gray slop at this time? Any thoughts?

This Kar should definitely have the Arvinode system.

Why do so many of these Kars have the coil mounted on the drivers side? Is this just for convenience?

Don't know why it's that way other than lack of knowledge. There are plenty of examples with the correct location to see how it is installed.

I have seen just two cars with photo evidence that the coil was delivered on the "other" side. In both cases, one a well known car, they had each received dealer "add-ons" with original paperwork for proof.

Both original owners state that they were likely changed by the selling dealer when the modifications were performed and claim only that the cars are "as purchased" not as delivered.

I would suspect that as it is today, it was faster and easier to bolt the coil bracket to the opposite side where there are less obstacles.

Interesting bit of information as usual, JP.. I guess it's safe to say that two kars out of thousands does not set a pattern of "normalcy" or correctness. It's strange that FORD assembly line design experts would choose to mount the coil on the "right" side despite obstacles if it is "easier" to mount it on the "wrong" side.

Keep in mind that, externally, all 289 engines are basically the same. The left hand side of the engine is where P/S and A/C units mount when ordered and there would be no room for the coil when they are attached. Keeping the coil mounting on the right hand side makes sense for Ford as that keeps everything standardized at the engine build up time.

Your reply sheds more light onto why there is little chance that the car came this way.
There are many photos available on the web as well as in the Ford archives showing completed engines waiting to be loaded into railcars. All of these photos show the coil on the "correct" side.

This photo is from our friends at the Concours forums:
Image

Further investigation of assembly line photos and video shows engines installed prior to coolant hoses etc. connected with the coil clearly visible. Each of these shows that the hoses would not be "in the way" if the coil was installed first.

Like this photo from the Detroit news:
Image

As you can see the coil is installed prior to the assembly line. The hoses are yet to be connected and filled with fluid.

Probably just a coincidence, but both original aforementioned cars with the coil on the "wrong side" had the same modification done by the selling dealerships.

Interesting that the convertible in the last picture is an export car.

In the upper picture I thought that I saw a Hipo engine due to the chrome valve covers, but the engine has the heat tube for the automatic choke. :(

Quite possibly a FALCON Sprint engine?

That's exactly right...assembly lines function at their best when this is the goal of the designers.

The engines in the picture are 1965 6 bolt engines. The 65 Falcon Sprint was only available as a 2V engine from what I understand and the engine in question has a 4V carburetor. The only 4V 1965 Falcon engines were in Rancheros in 1965. Maybe this engine is for a 65 Comet Cyclone if they used chrome valve covers?

Getting back to the car for sale: Is that red oxide underbody correct? I thought they were all gray slop paint at this time. NJ and SJ used red oxide a lot but not Dearborn. If that red is incorrect, then the cost of remediation would put this out of the cost ball pack for me.

Correct.
Dearborn cars would be batch color underneath. One of the many corrections that this car requires.

This is a nice looking fastback in the pictures, but based of the results of four previous auctions, it also looks like it's a mid 40's kar all day long.

Change that to five previous auctions that ended in the low to mid forties...
